Our History

Urban Equity Consulting Group emerged from a decade-long collaborative journey that laid the foundation for its inception in 2019. Prior to formal establishment, our team operated as a collective of independent contractors, united by a shared passion for equitable urban development. Over ten years, we engaged in diverse projects across Washington, DC, and beyond, operating under different banners, collaborating with various organizations, and leaving a trail of positive impact.

From the seeds of Urban Equity's inception which were sown during the tenure of Elijah Moses and his wife, Zimriyah, as they launched and led Leverage Consulting Group or the collaboration between it’s current co-founders, the journey has been long but intentional.  Through each phase, collective vision and dedication provided the initial framework for what would eventually evolve into Urban Equity Consulting Group.

Driven by a vision of leveraging creativity, curating transformation and seeding better teams , we embarked on an intentional shift. This shift led us to chart a path toward becoming a Certified Business Enterprise (CBE) in Washington, DC, a pivotal step that enabled us to consolidate our expertise and import our private clients into the Urban Equity portfolio.

At the helm of Urban Equity Consulting Group stand Elijah Moses and Cara Fuller, visionary leaders with over 15 years of extensive experience in workforce development, professional staff development and education. Elijah Moses, a luminary in federal nonprofit programs, brought his wealth of expertise from roles at the University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC) and the Department of Employment Services (DOES), fostering federal workforce programming and training across numerous Washington, DC charter school programs. Cara Fuller, a seasoned educator and workforce development professional, has left an indelible mark on Federally funded YouthBuild and DC Public Schools, shaping innovative programs and managing teams to surpass funding and program objectives.

Together, Moses and Fuller co-founded Urban Equity Consulting Group, infusing it with their expertise and dedication. Urban Equity operates as a small but dynamic team of ten individuals, including contractors, core staff, volunteers, and project collaborators. As Avenues Architect and Co-Principal, Moses spearheads strategic initiatives, while Cara Fuller, serving as the Innovation Alchemist and Chief Project Delivery Officer, leads the charge in designing and managing transformative programs.

United by a commitment to fostering inclusive, thriving communities, Urban Equity Consulting Group stands as a testament to years of dedication and a vision for an equitable urban future.

Our Original Vision

The original vision behind Urban Equity Consulting Group was intricately woven with the aspiration of establishing a cooperatively owned consulting firm, fostering an environment where collective ownership, shared responsibilities, and equitable decision-making were foundational principles. On September 11, 2016, we connected with over fifteen leaders to form a supergroup of brown consultants and subject matter experts. The meeting took place at The Community College Preparatory Academy, then located at 2405 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE, Washington, DC.

Recognizing the immense talent and commitment within their then team of contractors and collaborators, the founders believed that a cooperative model would not only enhance individual dedication but also foster a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. This vision was rooted in the belief that shared ownership would lead to better engagement, innovative problem-solving, and a stronger commitment to the company's mission of promoting equitable urban business development. Eventually, interest and follow through faded away and sixteen became eight, eight became four and three became two.

While the journey towards a fully cooperatively owned consulting firm was not actually realized, we also came to understand that it might just be a gradual process. The spirit of collective ownership and collaboration remained at the heart of Urban Equity Consulting Group's ethos, driving its mission to create equitable urban environments.
